When you’re a freelancer writer, you might end up writing about a different topic every day or even multiple topics in a single day. You may write about animals and children or health and new shoes. Despite your willingness to write about anything and everything, there are advantages of writing most of the time in a single niche where you excel and where you look for publications that closely align with your expertise.
If you currently write about a wide range of topics, it can be difficult to know what your niche is. Use these three steps to determine your freelance writing niche.
Step 1: Consider What You Love
In order to find the writing niche that you should be in, you should consider your hobbies and interests. Most often, you will do best by writing about something that you love. Think about your life and all that you are interested in. Choose to write about something that brings you joy.
Step 2: Find Your Niche Expertise
If you are looking to find a niche where you will be able to do good writing and always please your clients, you want to find something that you know about. Try to write about that.
If you were always good at science, then you might choose to write scientific pieces. If you have studied baking and culinary arts for a long time, then you might want to write up recipes. Find a niche that fits with you and your knowledge.
Step 3: Think About Who You Are
It is important for you to have an area of writing in which you excel, and the more that you work on that area, the better you will be at what you do. Choose a niche that fits with who you are and what you know. If you have certain principles or beliefs, try to find writing assignments that align with them.
