Tips for Writing Your Novel

If you’re a writer, then one of your biggest dreams is probably to write a novel and have it published. Sure, it sounds simple – put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) and start writing! But getting started can be hard especially when you have no clue where to start. You figure it out, and you finally finish writing. Once the novel is written, what do you do then? Just throw it out there? You wouldn’t serve food without testing it first, right? Right.

So, Here are a couple of tips to help you through the next steps in publishing your novel.

First, keep in mind that just because you think you have finished writing your novel, doesn’t mean the writing process is over. In fact, your job is far from over and has really just begun. No book is ever finished after the first draft. Re-read it, you will undoubtedly find things you want to change and mistakes that need to be addressed. Go through it and self-edit for every mistake you can find. You’re the author, so there are some things that only you will know and understand about the book, which is why you should look it over yourself at least twice, if not more. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself re-writing several pages – which also means more editing. Don’t skip the extra editing! This novel is your baby, and you want to take care of it.

Second, have someone else edit it. In the same way you shouldn’t rely solely on a professional to edit your work, you shouldn’t only have yourself look over it either. Polishing a book takes a perfect balance between both. Having someone else look at your book will open up the opportunity to get someone else’s opinion. They can look at the book with fresh eyes. We, as authors, often miss things in our books simply because they are our books. Having a professional editor, though it may cost you, will benefit you in the end. If you’re thinking “I edited my book so many times, there can’t be any errors,” think again. The number of errors you found in your first self-edit, a second editor (a professional editor) will be able to point out just as many through the editing process and offer suggestions to enhance your novel along the way.
